Upcoming Events

I’ve been known to travel to user groups, or present virtually, and provide SQL Server training on database development, performance tuning, and basic database administration. Typically these sessions are about an hour long and I’ll work through a slide deck and demonstrations. Afterward you can ask me questions.

Upcoming Training

Triangle SQL Server User Group – January 11th, 2011 @ noon

I’ll be speaking at the Triangle SQL Server User Group on January 11th about SQL Server Internals. This will be a LiveMeeting, so anyone can attend!.

SQL Server Internals

Want to know what makes SQL Server tick? Ever wonder what SQL Server is doing when you run a query? Ever wonder which parts of SQL Server are responsible for specific functionality? Want to know what a HOBT is? I can’t promise answers to every question, but I can set you on the path to knowledge about the inner workings of SQL Server.

Columbus Ruby Brigade in Columbus, OH – February 21st, 2011 @ 6:30PM

I’ll be speaking at the Columbus Ruby Brigade on February 21st. This is a live, in person, meeting at Quick Solutions (440 Polaris Parkway, Westerville, OH 43082). Unfortunately, no online meeting is available. Sad, I know.

Riak: An Overview

PASS Application Development Virtual Chapter – March 22 @ 8:00PM

Hybrid Data from 50,000 Feet

Chefs use different knives when they are preparing food; no one knife is suited for every task. Centuries of practice and study have created a rich set of tools for chefs of all skill levels. Why should you use one tool when you’re working with data?

The relational database is a versatile tool, but shouldn’t we explore other ways to store and manipulate data? We will look at four scenarios – caching, session state, flexible data models, and batch processing – and discuss how SQL Server performs in each situation and what other options exist on the market. At the end of this session, attendees will have a better understanding of how different workloads perform in SQL Server, some best practices, and alternative storage solutions to make your life as a DBA easier.

The Experts Conference in Las Vegas, NV – April 17-20, 2011

The Experts Conference is an event focusing on cutting edge Microsoft technologies. There are a lot of smart people here, and I’m pretty honored to be presenting.

7 Buzzwords About Emerging Databases and What They Mean

A lot of buzzwords are frequently thrown around with emerging databases – partitioning, sharding, replication, consistency, caching, key/value pairs, distributed. Definitions of these terms are rapidly becoming cloudy, yet understanding them is critical to designing and building a new datastore. We are going to cut through the hype surrounding emerging database terminology and explore each one in turn. We will look at what these concepts mean, how they work, and how they apply to different database solutions.
